Soils as natural carbon sinks – Practical implementation of water and soil management and requirements for CAP measures

Host: Czech Society for Ornithology in collaboration with DVL and Landcare Europe

 

Thematic focus:

  • Soils as carbon sinks and its relation to biodiversity & the water cycle
  • Situation of soils in Europe (including CAP)
  • Presentation of challenges and  best-practice examples across Europe on the practical implementation of water and soil management from the perspective of farmers Landcare(-like) organisations and administration
  • Roundtable discussion on success factors and necessary regulatory changes in  the CAP for fostering extensively managed grasslands as natural carbon sinks 

 

Programme:

Day 0 (29. Sept 2024): Arrival, optional dinner (costs not covered by project)

Day 1 (30. Sept 2024): Presentations & Roundtable discussions (full day)

Day 2 (1. Oct 2024): Excursion day: farm visit & irrigation systems (full day)

Day 3: (2. Oct 2024): Internal meeting of EUKI project team members (half day)

 

Goal:

The experts will discuss a position paper on soil management in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Experts will receive an input paper including preliminary positions 14 days prior to the workshop.

 

Cost cover:

The workshop is part of the project “Landcare Europe Captures Carbon - Supporting Natural Climate Protection in Agricultural Landscapes” funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) through the European Climate Initiative (EUKI). Cost for 25 experts can be covered, including food, accommodation and travel expenses up to 500€ per person. Experts will be chosen according to their background and geographic allocation. Participation for one day only is possible. After registering you will be informed till August 1st by the host Czech Society for Ornithology.
