Peatlands as natural carbon sinks

Location: Vilnius, Lithuania

Workshop on peatlands as natural carbon sinks within the EUKI project: “Landcare Europe Captures Carbon. Supporting Natural Climate Protection in Agricultural Landscapes.”

Hosts: Baltic Environmental Forum, DVL and Landcare Europe

in cooperation with the EUKI project "Building a European Peatlands Alliance" and "Eurosite Annual Meeting"

Please register until June 30th.

Thematic focus:

  • Focus: Peatlands are vital for climate action. To meet Europe's climate and biodiversity goals, practical options for peat-friendly agriculture and rewetting of peat soils need to be tested and scaled up. Despite covering only 3-4% of Earth’s land surface, they store a third of the world’s soil carbon, making them natural carbon sinks. However, in Europe, drainage and unsustainable land use threaten this crucial function. This workshop will focus on solutions, how to scale-up rewetting of peatlands in agricultural landscapes.
  • The first part of the workshop on Tuesday will show best practice examples from different European countries, focusing on wet agriculture and paludiculture. In the context of the
current Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), the market value chains, new financial incentives and carbon farming, how can long-term solutions be found?
  • The second part of the workshop on Tuesday, a focus paper will be developed on peatlands as natural carbon sinks. The paper is aimed at the EU Member States to improve
the CAP framework to support farming on high water peatlands. How can pan-European cooperation trigger large-scale change in Europe, reinforcing the vital role of peatlands?
  • The workshop will be followed by a thematic field visit on Wednesday, showing appealing peatland and agricultural areas in Lithuania, where works are done to improve
hydrological regimes, supported by community cooperation.

Programme:

Day 0 (08 Sept 2025): Arrival, optional dinner (costs not covered by project)

Day 1 (09 Sept 2025): Workshop Day: Presentations & Roundtable discussions (full day)

Day 2 (10 Sept 2025 ): Excursion Day: peatland restoration & farming on peatlands with high water levels, grazing and paludiculture (full day)

Day 3: (11 Sept 2025): Team meeting of EUKI project team members (full day)

Goal:

The experts will discuss a position paper on climate friendly peatland farming in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Experts will receive an input paper including preliminary positions 10 days prior to the workshop.

Cost cover:

The workshop is part of the project “Landcare Europe Captures Carbon - Supporting Natural Climate Protection in Agricultural Landscapes” funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) through the European Climate Initiative (EUKI). Cost for 25 experts can be covered, including food, accommodation and travel expenses up to 500€ per person. Experts will be chosen according to their background and geographic allocation.
