“Humanity will need new models of agriculture in the immediate future: more sustainable, biodiverse, local, resilient, and socially just.” (FAO GIAHS website)
Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems are more complex than conventional heritage sites or protected areas/landscapes. Rich in globally significant biological diversity evolving from the co-adaptation of a community with its environment and its needs and aspirations for sustainable development specific agricultural systems and landscapes have been created and maintained over generations using available resources and management practices adapted to the local context. In Europe, to date 7 GIAHS (of 67 worldwide) have been designated - 4 in Spain, 2 in Italy and 1 in Portugal - with potential for more nominations also from other European countries.
This online information session is a cooperation between the GIAHS Secretariat, Prof. Agnoletti from the University of Firenze and DVL. Participation is free of charge after online registration.
