Workshops, online information sessions & EU-conference in 2022 & 2023

Landcare Europe organises a series of workshops, webinars and a conference to share the successes and challenges of cooperative nature conservation of Landcare organisations in Europe, who are working together with farmers, conservationists and communities to preserve and restore biodiversity, resilient ecosystems and quality of life in European cultural heritage landscapes. 

The events are open for everyone who is interested in the work of Landcare Europe or in joining the network. 

The activities are part of the project “Improving guidance and knowledge sharing between land managers, conservationists and local communities to preserve cultural heritage landscapes under and outside Natura 2000”, funded by the European Commission.

What to expect?

The 3-day workshops in different EU countries will focus on Landcare key activities and their contribution to the EU environmental targets (see individual programme overview below for topics).

General workshop programme:

Day 1: Thematic presentations and exchanges on best practices in roundtable discussions (full-day)

Day 2: Field visit to demonstration site and exchange with local experts on workshop topic (full-day)

Day 3: Internal meeting with Landcare Europe founding partners (half-day until 1pm)


Starting in September 2022, an online informtion series will be organised to allow additional exchange on Landcare relevant topics and encourage cooperation with other organisations.


The results of the workshop and webinar exchanges will be presented during a 1-day EU-level conference in Brussels in 2023. The conference is also an opportunity to join the network during the official foundation ceremony.

If you are generally interested in Landcare Europe, would like to join the network or stay updated with its activities, please sign up to our mailing list. We will send updates twice a year or more if needed, but not on a weekly or monthly basis.  

Additional information:

  • Participation in the network activities is free of charge. Catering during the workshop and transport to demonstration sites during field visit are provided for all participants. Local accommodation incl. breakfast during the workshop (3 nights) will be organised by DVL. Accommodation and travel costs can be covered for up to 20 experts (up to an agreed limit) to be confirmed by DVL.
  • This registration page is for expression of interest to the activities and agreeing to be contacted by Landcare Europe for further information. It does not confirm your participation at any of the activities. You will receive additional information about participation and cost coverage (if applicable) closer to the dates.
  • English is required for active participation in discussions.

Workshop Romania

Human & wildlife co-existence – traditional & modern farming approaches in the mountains in & outside Natura 2000 areas

Date: 11-13 July 2022            

Location: Sighisoara & West Carpathian Mountains

Thematic focus:

  • Management of large carnivores in rural areas & farmland  
  • Human-wildlife conflicts and damage compensation system for farmers
  • Developing alternatives to (certified) “organic” farms (agroecology)
  • Use of CAP subsidies for forest & grassland management in N2000 areas
  • Promoting rural tourism & creating local jobs in N2000 areas

Workshop Spain

Improving water management, biodiversity, ecosystem services & yield in intensively farmed systems & agroforests in & outside Natura 2000 areas

Date: 7-9 March 2023                       

Location: Andalucía

Thematic focus:

  • Positive socio-economic impacts of natural & cultural heritage sites and Natura 2000 on agricultural areas (incl. agrotourism)
  • Improved soil quality and water use in areas with increased drought risks
  • Recommendations for better CAP agri-environmental measures

Workshop Lithuania

Innovative approaches for species & habitat restoration in & outside Natura 2000 areas – good-practice-based payment schemes (GPBPS)

Date: 18-20 April 2023          

Location: Nemunas Delta & Kaunas/Vilnius (tbc)

Thematic focus:

  • Expanding & improving the Natura 2000 network in collaboration with farmers & other land users
  • Result-based payment schemes (RBPS) vs. (GPBPS)
  • Restoring wetlands & farmland bird habitat for biodiversity & farming 
  • Product development and marketing of agricultural „waste”

Landcare Europe Webinar Series (online)

Discussions on key activities of Landcare organisations in and outside Natura 2000 areas.

Dates: starting in September 2022

Location: online (WebEx)

First webinar: Thursday, 15 Sept 2022 from 4-6 pm CET on Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) with Professor Mauro Agnoletti, UNESCO chair of Agricultural Heritage Landscapes, University Firenze, Italy

Landcare Europe Conference in Brussels

Presentation of key factors for successful cooperative nature conservation beyond border in our European cultural heritage landscapes.

Date: June 2023 (date tbc)
